• On 3rd Dhu al-Hijjah, Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) left for ‘Kufa’ with his family, companions and servants – and settled in Karbala for his stay. Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) was critical of Kufians but he also knew that without his struggle, the religion of Islam will not survive. So, after backing down of Kufians from their promise, Imam Hussain (R.A) raised his battle banner for Islam.

On 2nd Muharram ul-Haram, Imam Hussain (R.A) reached Karbala and bought a piece of land there for camp that is called “Jageer-e-Ali Akbar” (Tenement of Ali Akbar) to this day. He (R.A) bought the land with 3 promises from sellers that, 1. You’ll bury our dead if we become martyrs here, 2. This land will never be used for any other purpose, and 3. After our end, if our relatives and loved ones visit our graves – you’ll treat them as your guest.

Yazid’s forces of 9 lakh men rounded, killed and brutalized 72 members of Hazrat Imam Hussain’s (R.A) family along with Him (R.A) and put their heads on spears to parade them in markets. And dragged their women to stone and dishonor them.

Thomas Carlyle, a Scottish philosopher and writer said, “In the history of Islam, especially the life of Imam Hussain (R.A) stands unique, unapproached and unapproachable by anyone. Without his martyrdom, Islam would have extinguished long ago. He was the savior of Islam and it was due to his martyrdom that Islam took such a deep root, which it is neither possible nor even imaginable to destroy now.”
