Communication

  • Communication can be defined as exchange of information, data or knowledge related to something which is passed on shared with individuals or groups. It can be one to one or one to many.

    Then comes the Mass Communication which is a wide spread communication. It is a process in which a person, group of people or an organization sends a message on a larger scale through a channel of communication which reaches a wide range of people or organization. Now, the Interpersonal Communication is when two or more people communicate with each other or exchange of feelings, information or knowledge. It involves both large and small groups. It can take many forms. For example, it can be verbal (speaking one to one), written (in a text or an email etc.) or non-verbal(for instance facial expression and hands gestures).

    A best chance for a common understanding to be held between people in an ideal interpersonal communication totally depends on various factors. For instance, the three broader categories would be geographical characteristics, demographical characteristics and psychographic characteristics.

    The geographical characteristics is where the communication is based upon weather, climate, area to be covered for the message or information that has to be passed on or exchanged.

    The demographical characteristics would be where population would be considered among which the interpersonal communication needs to be held such as age, gender, education etc.

    The psychographic characteristics can be where the communication is held on the basis of lifestyle, interests, values, beliefs someone follows. It is mostly influenced by the social class someone belongs to.

    Common understanding will be established in an ideal interpersonal communication situation when one would have these skills as mentioned below;

    • Speaking: This is the foremost important skill in an interpersonal communication for common understanding which means one should have command on his words. One should always be aware of the effect of his chosen words on the listener.
    • Listening: The ability to listen other’s point of view with patience and attention so that one can understand fully others perspective regarding the subject issue.
    • Body language: While speaking or listening one must use body gestures to strengthen his point of view and keep the audience attentive.
    • Medium for communication: The use of appropriate medium for conveying or receiving the message plays a vital role in effective communication.
    • Confidence: One should be confident while communicating with others and take full responsibility of his actions and words.
    • Realization: To ensure effective and efficient communication one must know the environment or surroundings of the situation where the interpersonal communication is being held.

     

    No doubt interpersonal communication is an art which requires practice, skills and common interest among people.

     At last, these skills as mentioned above would be helpful to achieve an ideal interpersonal communication situation in which there would be the best chance for common understanding to be established.
