Product tests: in the factory and / or laboratory?

  • Should products be tested during inspection or in the laboratory? This blog often extols the virtues of inspecting products in the factory during and at the end of production. As we have mentioned in previous articles, the inspections mainly focus on the cosmetic appearance, functionality, specifications, measurements of the product.

Some importers sometimes ask if inspectors can also perform a full battery of product tests during the factory inspection day. Indeed, inspectors can do simple product tests on site, it all depends on whether the supplier has the right tools to do them.

The following are examples of some simple product tests that can often be done at the factory:

    • Hi-Pot
    • Simple color fastness - Simple color fastness test
    • Adhesion test
    • Shrink test, if the factory has the washer
    • Smell test
    • Resistance test (abuse test)

While the above tests are feasible in many factories, more complex tests generally need to be performed in outside laboratories. Why? First, inspectors are highly skilled at spotting faults and doing simple tests, whereas for complex tests laboratories have a different, t different level of skill. Secondly, and above all, because most suppliers lack expensive and technical machines to perform these tests on site.

So what are the types of product testing that labs can conduct? Here are some examples:

    • REACH Testing
    • RoHS Testing
    • Food contact tests
    • Azo Dye - Azo Dye
    • Phthalates Testing
    • FR-71-2 and 3 Toy Testing
    • Cadmium Test
