Final Year Project: "Traffic in Rawalpindi and it's solutions"

  • Our University Riphah International has always been keen on pushing it’s students to participate in extracurricular activities which are healthy and can put a positive impact on the community around us. One of the extracurricular activity in the recent years has been letting the students have traffic education taught by the experts.

This led me to deciding the my final year project which was going to be the Chaos of Traffic in Rawalpindi. I didn’t want to just focus on the negative parts of this city. I wanted to make the viewers fall in love with the city first and then head to find out how to preserve the city they love so much. I use the reverse psychology trick here in this research documentary supervised by Miss Nirmal Javed from the Riphah International University.

Rawalpindi commonly known as Pindi is a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Rawalpindi is adjacent to Pakistan's capital of Islamabad, and the two are jointly known as the "twin cities" on account strong social and economic links between the cities. Rawalpindi is the fourth-largest city in Pakistan. This city is home to an estimated 2.1 million people. This bright city is filled with love, colors, art and its amazing cuisine. This city is filled with exotic buildings, enriched with culture and memories which date backs to hundreds of years. Rawalpindi is also a hub of employment for a diverse group of people who come from all over the globe to earn a living for their financial stability. In the years following independence, Rawalpindi saw an influx of Muhajir, Pashtun and Kashmiri settlers. Having been the largest British Cantonment in the region at the dawn of Pakistan's independence, Rawalpindi was chosen as headquarters for the Pakistani Army, despite the fact that Karachi had been selected as the first capital. I can go on and on about the amazing history and significance of Rawalpindi but let’s go towards how it’s suffering from a serious crisis of Traffic.

The traffic issue is a serious issue this city is facing. My documentary discusses in depth about what are the reasons of this issue. They include but are not limited to unplanned car parking spaces, no traffic ed being made compulsory and more. The traffic is so bad that it can take upto hours before the jam gets clear every other day. This has led to less attraction by the visitors who want to explore the city and it’s rich values.

My documentary discusses the reasons behind this chaos in traffic but it doesn’t leave you hanging. It goes into finding out how to solve this issue. This documentary goes into deep conversations with 4 intellectuals which include one of the Traffic Police Officer who’s in charge of the Traffic Education department which worked out perfectly with the essence of my documentary. The solutions are the following but are not limited to only the following:

    • Foremost is making sure we as individuals have full knowledge of traffic rules.
    • Car-pooling.
    • Schedule your travel in non-rush hours so we let the traffic go smoothly.
    • Walk to places where you can!
    • Ban all the illegal drivers without licence.
    • Only taxpayers should be permitted to have vehicles.
    • Allot a legal place for the vendors to distribute their goods/fruits/vegetables.
    • Traffic rule education should be made compulsory.
    • Planned Car parking spaces for malls, schools etc.

It turns out the solutions are not very difficult to imply especially the ones which individuals can do on their own. All we need is a mindset to empower ourselves and preserve the city which belongs to us. The documentary tells us solutions which are doable by everyday public not just in Rawalpindi but all over the globe in the most practical way possible.

Let’s join hands, empower each other and stop the chaos!
