Pakistan Railways carriage Factory, Islamabad, was established in the year 1970 at a cost of Rs.
89 million including Rs. 35 million Foreign Exchange. The factory was planned and set up in
collaboration with a reputed German Manufacturer M/s. Linke-Hofinann-Busch of West
Germany, who is the leading designer and manufacturer of passenger carriages in Europe. The
factory has a planned maximum capacity of 150 carriages per year on single shift Working. It
attained this capacity of 150 carriages in the year 1978-79. About 400 machines were provided
by Germany at the time of establishment of factory. New machinery has also been procured
from China in 2004. For the maintenance of machinery, greasing is done on regular basis and
scheduled maintenance of machines is after 2 or 3 months. Overhauling of machines is
performed after 1 or 2 years depending upon the condition of machine. Machine is stopped
from working and then it’s overhauling id done. The factory is divided into wings, Fabrication
Wing consists of three bays, each 200 meters long, with provision of over head cranes, high
capacity eccentric and brake presses, bending machines, forming machines, drilling machines,
plate straightening machines, arc welding equipments, butt welding machines and spot welding
machines. The various stages of Fabrication work are accomplished by utilizing the above
equipment and the rotary fixtures. The tensioning of the shell is also effected through Electro-
magnetic tensioned. Furnishing Wing consists o f two bays, each .200 meters long with one
bay" entirely devote to painting where facilities for spray painting, drying and baking of coach
components are available with provision for paint fumes through exhaust blowers. In the
“second bay, the entire interior furnishing including train lighting work is attended, too. This
bay is equipped for the preparation and lying of cement flooring etc, other works done in
Aluminum Shop, Pipe Section, Trimming Section and Train lighting Shop .
